Who we are — and what
year one produced.

Who we are

Not a club that talks about science.

Katy ISD's first student-led cancer research organization — a registered 501(c)(3) that places members on live research, publishes their work in OncoLegacy, and opens doors to labs that don't normally take high schoolers.

The Year Ahead

Meetings, labs, and
what we're building.

What we do

Four pillars, one goal.

01

Research Placement

We connect members to university and hospital labs — and help write the emails that actually get answered.

02

Meeting Curriculum

Every meeting: one oncology subspecialty, one research masterclass. Depth, not filler.

03

OncoLegacy Journal

Our student-run publication — members turn hard oncology into writing the community can read.

04

Outreach & Advocacy

Fundraising, awareness, and collaborations across the Katy & Cypress area.

Rice University.

A campus group tour — plus the research happening directly across the street.

The Tour

A one-hour group tour for our chapter — up to 40 students, booked a semester out. Not sightseeing: we come with questions.

The Labs Next Door

Rice Bioengineering — Immunoengineering & Cancer: teaching the immune system to recognize tumors, alongside the Institute of Biosciences & Bioengineering.

Texas Medical Center

MD Anderson & Baylor sit across the street — the same institutions our members already work with.

In-house labs

Hands-on, not hypothetical.

Pathology Lab

Read the slide yourself.

100+ diseased tissue slides and real microscopes we provide — you sit down, focus the field, and learn to spot what a pathologist sees.

40× · H&E field · focusing…
Microbiology Lab

Grow it. Then kill it.

Culture a live bacterial strain, drop in different antibiotics, and measure the zones of inhibition — real antibiotic-susceptibility testing.

CRS AACR Team

A year-long project toward a national presentation. Applications for the 2028 team open April 2027.

Case study · computational docking

3,000 compounds. One kinase.

DCLK1 · PDB 7F3G · AutoDock Vina → Boltz-2
01

Screen

An approved-drug library docked against the DCLK1 kinase domain — 3,000+ compounds.

02

Filter

Benchmark vs. known binders; cut by hinge hydrogen-bond pose quality.

03

Re-score

Top hits re-scored with Boltz-2 co-folding into a defensible shortlist.

04

Validate

Wet-lab confirmation — MST, ITC, kinase-array. Prediction becomes data.

Member spotlight

Austin Zhou.

Teaching a neural network to spot Mott cells and Russell bodies on pathology slides — the morphological fingerprint of multiple myeloma.

No published model targets them. No public dataset labels them. So he's building both.

The incentive

Earn your way to Orlando.

Members who show the most commitment win a flight-covered trip to AACR 2027 — the American Association for Cancer Research annual meeting, where practicing oncologists present. This past April our members flew to San Diego for our first research trip; next stop, Orlando.

01

Earn points

Meeting attendance, OncoLegacy submissions, outreach hours, and progress on your own research project.

02

The fund covers

Flights for selected members, plus AACR registration for students who couldn't otherwise go — from the $5,000+ we've raised.

03

Why it matters

You don't just attend AACR — you present alongside it.

Where we've been where we're going
New this year

Spartan Ethics Society.

Bi-monthly case discussions on the ethics inside modern medicine — integrated with CRS, so your research and your ethics training run together.

Mock IRB

Review real protocol scenarios the way a review board would.

Protocol Review

Learn what makes a study ethically sound before you run it.

Integrity Training

Authorship, data handling, conflicts of interest, consent.

Game break
